National Archives Offers "Today's Document" as Mobile App

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is now offering a mobile version of Today's Document, which is featured on the NARA web site. The application provides access to 365 documents and photographs, with background information available for each, among other functionalities.

The document for today happens to be a portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was born on January 15, 1929. Created by Betsy G. Reyneau, the painting is part of NARA's donated collections, Record Group 200.

New Mobile Application for PLoS Medicine

The Center for Biomedical Informatics at the Harvard Medical School in collaboration with the Public Library of Science (PLoS.org) have created a free iPhone application for PLoS Medicine, the open-access journal publishing important original research and analysis relevant to human health.

To give it a test drive, simply visit the iTunes Application store and download it to your iPhone or iPod Touch. To launch the application, simply touch the PLoS icon and you are immediately taken to a screen that contains the most recent and viewed articles, with an option to search for anything else from the current or archive issues using your touch keypad.
Other features include:

• Clear article layout – with options to view the PDF or view online
• Favorite and share – straight from your phone
• Access the full archive – never be without the content you need again
• Get further information – about PLoS in general and PLoS Medicine specifically

Mobile Options for the National Library of Medicine

The National Library of Medicine now offers mobile options for such resources as PubMed, MedlinePlus, NCBI Bookshelf, AIDSinfo, Wireless System for Emergency Responders (WISER), and Radiation Event Medical Management (REMM).

Mobile options for the UNC Campus and UNC Libraries are also available. Chad Haefele, the developer of the UNC Libraries mobile site, was recently mentioned in the American Library Associations's Perpetual Beta blog for his Mobile Site Generator, which is described in detail on his own blog, Hidden Peanuts.

New Mobile Options for UNC Libraries

Users of mobile phones, Blackberries, and similar devices now have access to UNC Library collections and services with two sites designed just for them:

-- Mobile UNC Library site
-- For Blackberry and plain-text

The mobile sites provide access to books, journals, research tools, and, of course, librarians in a format specially designed for on-the-go research.

Site features include mobile-friendly access to:

-- Library hours and contact information
-- Online catalog
-- IM and text connections to librarians
-- Research tools including the RefWorks bibliographic management program and the PubMed database from the National Library of Medicine
